px90 Day 1 – Chest and Back

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to post yesterday so I’m posting today instead. My chest is hurting. Never have I stretched so much in one day. Stretching is the only thing that feels good right now, my muscles are beyond sore.

Day 1 of px90 should be called push-ups and pull-ups. You basically do an hour of push-ups and pull-ups. You do 24 sets in all. The push-ups weren’t so bad but the pull-ups took everything out of me. I had to use the chair for all the pull-ups. When using the chair you basically put your foot on it and push yourself up when your back and arms don’t have the strength to pull up. Even with the chair I was only able to do a few pull-ups per set. I think pull-ups are going to be my biggest struggle as I have no back muscles.

So after getting through the first px90 workout I was hit with a Mac-Truck… Ab Ripper X. I imagine this is a brutal workout on its’ own, but doing so after chest and back is terrible. After doing a hundred or so push-ups and 15 or so pull-ups I wanted to be slouching on my couch… NOT doing 339 ab reps.

I didn’t do 339 reps, I did about 60. There are quite a few ab exercises during the 15 minute workout. I’d like to make a recommendation here, don’t kill yourself on the first set. Make a goal with yourself that you’re going to do 5 – 10 reps per exercise. It may seem low for the first few exercises but you’ll thank me by the time you get to the 7th exercise. As time goes on you can increase your reps. I couldn’t do some of the exercises but at the end of it all I felt like I was kicked in the stomach by a mule, so I did something right.

Let me make another recommendation. Eat enough food before doing the px90. I did not eat enough food and I was feeling light headed half way through the workout. One nice thing about the DVDs is the time bar at the bottom of the screen. The time bar indicates the remaining time of the entire workout as well as the remaining time for the set you are currently on. The time bar is annoying when it reads 45:08 but really nice when it reads 06:34. If you start getting light headed with more than 30 minutes left you need to drink more water, eat more food prior to working out or pace yourself more evenly.

Summary of px90 Day 1: This is not going to be a Richard Simmons or Billy Blanks workout. This is going to be tough all the way through.
